I love scary movies, but I love them for the thrills and chills that come from eerie whatnots that go bump in the night. And I like gore, but mostly in action movies and freak fests, I’ve never found the painful or the disgusting scary or enthralling. So naturally, I’m not too up on the movies Joss Whedon calls “torture porn,” a genre of movies that is often confused with straight-up horror and tend to appeal to sadist and masochists respectively. Hate them as I may, though their popularity is undeniable. People love to be squicked, they loved to push the boundaries of decency. Do you?
Frontier(s) is a movie with what seems to be a really decent plot — maybe not completely original set up, but still, it makes more sense than some other films that reference a certain Massacre in Texas. Besides, I’ll watch a thousand movies where Sadako is coming to get you, as long as they’re good, I don’t care if they’re not the first one on their premise. Check out the Trailer if you’re curious; there’s an actual plot, a rarity in modern western horror. This my be the first time they’ve done Nazi, and setting it against the backdrop of a recent real world event definitely took some guts. So if you like to be squicked by your horror, I think the best bet of the season is Frontier(s). It’s peaked my interest big, and that’s saying something!
Being unrated and too nasty for Horrorfest, Frontier(s) might not being showing at your local cineplex, but now you can check the selected theater listings at FrontiersUnrated to see if there’s a theater showing screening it near you and decide for yourself. I’d give it a try but the closest theater screening it is in Detoite. ::mrgreen::
